Wabash is not a cake walk. This institution forces its students to buckle down and to immerse themselves within their classwork, as well as immersing themselves on campus to gain the professional development skills that are needed in the workforce.
Dan Vannatter
1964-1968, Bachelor of the Arts
Wabash is an experience! Wabash is focused moreso than all other educational institutions on accomplishing its mission of producing graduates who are young men dedicated to "thinking critically, acting responsibly, leading effectively, and living humanely." Wabash builds men!
T. Arthur Poudrier
1992-1994, AB
When I transferred to Wabash as a junior in 1992, its promotional slogan was 'It Won't Be Easy; It Will Be Worth it !". Although Wabash was comparatively easier to enter than, say, Harvard or Amherst, it was by far more challenging than both to be graduated from, for unlike the vast majority of top schools in the US and abroad, a "Wally" must pass a both an oral exam and a comprehensive exam in the major(s), and complete a Senior Thesis that must be presented before students, and one's professors and visiting professors in the major(s). This necessitates an intense dedication to class attendance and study. The small classes and small student teacher ration--sometimes 1:1, like an Oxford tutorial, as was the case in a few of the courses in my Classics major--leaves one no place to hide. One is expected to come to class prepared to engage in intelligent discussions or debates about the subject under study. Exams typically include the writing of answers in essay form. All of this rigorous training results in one being capable of thinking on one's feet, presenting one's ideas logically, and holding one's own intelligently in a discussion or presentation, all key communication skills that employers and customers value. When you earn that Wabash vellum (yes, it's real sheepskin !), you are equipped to take on the world !
