School Description

Victoria University of Wellington was founded in 1897 as Victoria College, and gained its name because it was the same year that Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee. Teaching began two years later, with a student enrollment of just 115. The first years saw lectures held at a rented accommodation in the city, before the decision was made to build in Kelburn, an area that is today home to its Kelburn campus. Victoria College officially became Victoria University of Wellington on January 1, 1962.

Victoria University of Wellington has around 21,000 students, and 3000 international students that come from over 100 countries. In addition to its three campuses in Wellington, Victoria University has premises in Auckland and is also the only New Zealand university with an offshore campus in Vietnam. Being the capital of New Zealand, Wellington is an attractive destination for international students because of its rich culture and diverse community. Victoria University itself has an International Team that is dedicated to supporting international students from when they first arrive until they graduate.
