School Description

Vassar College was founded in 1861 as a pioneer of liberal arts education for women in the United States. The College then called Vassar Female College got its name from its founder, Matthew Vassar. Vassar commenced its first classes in September 1865 with 353 students and prided itself on offering young women a liberal arts education equal to that of the best men’s colleges. Art was a big part of the study at Vassar. When creating this college, Matthew Vassar stated that art should stand “boldly forth as an educational force.” To fulfill this mission, Vassar was the first college in the country to include a museum and teaching collection among its facilities.

Vassar became coeducational in 1969 and hence renamed, Vassar College. Today it is recognised as one of the best liberal arts colleges in the country. Vassar’s curriculum today is rich and varied with concentrations ranging from Latin to cognitive science, from biochemistry to religion and from astronomy to Africana studies. Vassar, was among the first colleges to offer courses in drama, psychology, and Russian and has experimented with interdepartmental courses since the early 1900s; it has long been recognised for curricular innovation.

          • Testimony
            1976-1980, AB cum laude

Small classes, interaction with full professors, important primary research, beautiful campus, and the freedom to become one's self in a safe environment-the hallmarks of Vassar. Life after Vassar has been greatly enhanced by an amazing alumnae network that for me includes the Vassar Clubs of London, Washington, D.C., and the San Francisco Bay Area. I have also remained good friends with several of my classmates and look forward to our reunions.

          • Testimony
            1988-1992, Bachelor of Arts

Wonderful professors with time for undergraduates! Beautiful historic campus. No core curriculum so I could dive right into the courses that interested me. Many opportunities for work experience through the fieldwork office. Fascinating student population with extra-curricular activities for every interest. Very nurturing, inspiring, and empowering environment for people who want to learn!

          • Testimony
            1996-2000, BA

Immediately, new students find themselves immersed in a phenomenal combination of administrators and professors who get you excited about academics with students who relate to each other at Vassar. I didn't realize before my time there how important the latter is but the lack of a pretentious & clique-less student body makes "finding yourself" much easier. When back in mainstream society & took a position in finance (finding a good job was something very few have after graduation from this institution). I enjoyed being an FX Options trader, but my time at Vassar has guided me towards what I love to do professionally: work with & help others. I work in the nonprofit sector now, but who knows where I find myself next. Vassar's definitelt taught me to not be afraid to search. Good luck fellow VC alum!
