School Description

University of York, established in 1963, started out with just 230 students. Since then it has become one of the world’s leading universities with approximately 15,500 students across over 30 academic departments and research centres in the Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, and Sciences. Over the years, the University has won five prestigious Times Higher Education Awards as well as ten Athena SWAN awards for supporting women in science. York is also a five-time winner of the Queen’s Anniversary Prize for research in the departments of Archaeology, Computer Science; Health Economics; Novel Agricultural Products and Social Policy Research.

The University attracts a student body with a wide range of backgrounds, including mature students, a large number of international students and a relatively high number of state school students. Some of the notable alumni of York University include John Witherow, Editor of The Times; Greg Dyke, former Director-General of the BBC; authors Jung Chang, Helen Dunmore and Anthony Horowitz, comedian Harry Enfield, and Peter Lord, a British animator, film producer, director and co-founder of the Academy Award-winning Aardman Animations studio.

All York students become members of one of York’s nine colleges, which provides a wealth of opportunities.     York University’s Heslington campus is located on over 500 acres of parkland surrounding two lakes, one of which is Europe’s largest plastic-bottomed lake. The University is famous for its abundance of wildfowl, including ducks, geese, swans, grebes, moorhens, coots, and herons as well as a diverse range of other wildlife. A bird sanctuary has also been established at the southern end of the large lake and a mystery photographer shares a ‘Duck of the Day’ photo on social media to the delight of staff, students and alumni.

            The best student experience

            To me, York combines everything that is good about university. It has a campus that gives the perfect community feel and is within walking distance of one of the UK's most beautiful cities. There is so much to do both at the university with sports, societies, volunteering and more, and in the city which is rich in culture.

            I loved my time at York (in Derwent College) studying Philosophy during 1968-1971 - intellectually stimulating, beautiful grounds and a wonderful ancient city nearby.
