School Description

The citizens of Allendale, Bamberg, and Hampton counties led an effort in 1964 to establish a center of higher education for their region of South Carolina. As a result, USC planned a campus for the area, and it was decided that the campus be placed in Allendale because it was the hometown of Lieutenant Governor Robert Evander McNair. In 1984, the campus was named after the Salkehatchie River because it runs through all five counties of the commission.

            1996-1999, Bachelor of Arts, Psychology

It was a struggle for me as an adult student and single mom to finally get my degree in 1999 from USC after years of going part-time. During the process, I had a great counselor who encouraged me consistently (Beck was her name) telling me "you can do this!" Finally, there WAS a light at the end of the tunnel and I could see that by quitting my job and going to summer school I could graduate that December. Beck was at my graduation to cheer me on! Just one of the many reasons why I will always be happy to have gotten my degree from the University of South Carolina. Go Gamecocks!

          • Testimony
, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), English and Intellectual History

The University of South Carolina strikes several crucial balances: it offers highly competitive undergraduate progams and widely respected graduate (and professional) programs; challenging academics and SEC sports appeal; a gorgeous historical campus setting and 21st century academic opportunities. There's no wonder that Carolina has earned some "public ivy" acclaim!

1983-1985, Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), International Relations and Affairs

Back in 1983, I applied for the Navy's Enlisted Commissioning Program and one of the three universities I selected to attend was the University of South Carolina. I chose it because of its reputation and because it had an outstanding Navy ROTC program. Columbia is a great place to go to school. The campus is beautiful and is surrounded by history. They have an excellent faculty and a wide selection of majors to choose from. In addition to the sports teams, there are plenty of activities for students to enjoy as part of their university experience. I graduated in December 1985 and I have always been proud to tell people that I am a graduate of the University of South Carolina. Catch the Gamecock spirit.
