School Description

The history of the University of South Alabama can be traced back to the early 1960s when Mobile’s civic leaders saw the need to improve access to higher education in southwest Alabama and began to formulate plans for a four-year, degree-granting institution. The University of South Alabama was officially established on May 3, 1963 and classes began a year later in June. From the get go the University saw rapid increase in enrollment, starting out with just 276 but rising to 928 in the next semester.

Over the years the University continued to introduce new programs and attract more students, while expanding its own facilities and footprint. From the very beginning the University was adamant about establishing a medical school; and this came to fruition in 1973. USA’s focus on health education was later complemented by the College of Nursing and the Pat Capps Covey College of Allied Health Professions. As a result the University of South Alabama today, encompasses a comprehensive health system composed of two hospitals — USA Medical Center and USA Children’s & Women’s Hospital — along with the USA Mitchell Cancer Institute and the USA Physicians Group. It also fields 17 Division I sports teams, including baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, volleyball and tennis.

Small College Feel - Big University Delivery

I highly recommend attending the University of South Alabama. USA is the kind of University with a small town feel to it. Lots of green lawns, quaint buildings scattered about, everyone says "Hi" as you pass by. But inside the classroom you get an education that you'd think you had to go to a larger, ivy league style University to get. The professors know their stuff and deliver it in a way that makes you want to learn more. I enjoyed my tenure at USA, both of them. I got my Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, and then a number of years later, went back and received my Master's degree in Public Administration. Very fond memories - wouldn't trade them for the world!

South Alabama Prepared Me For A Successful Future

Computer & Information Sciences was a relatively new major when I attended, but the curriculum offered everything I needed to give me to tools to compete in the business world. I use my skills today to head the IT Department for the nations 50th largest school district. I continue to recommend South Alabama to anyone who is serious about making a future for themselves. My daughter was just accepted to the College of Nursing and will certainly be successful upon her completion. Thank you South Alabama for preparing me and helping my family to be prepared for many years to come. Go Jags!!!

South Alabama Is There for Your Success

I am proud to be a South Alabama Jaguar! Great education aside; I have been able to go to anyone on campus and inquire how to get the needed help I was in search of and there was always someone to either help me or help point me in the right direction to get the right help I needed. I have never found myself in a situation where I was left to just figure it out on my own. So thank you South Alabama for all you have done for me to bring me to my success! I will take what you have instilled in me and touch others with the Jaguar Spirit too!
