In 1971 UMA became an autonomous institution and the seventh campus of the University of Maine System. In 1975, UMA offered its first baccalaureate degree program.

In 1986 UMA took on the responsibility of leading the University of Maine System. As part of this system, UMA developed a state-wide interactive television system with a network of over 100 off-campus centers and coordinated the delivery of university programs, courses, and services at these centers. This system, called University College became part UMA in 2008.
