The University of Kansas (KU) comprises of five campuses, located in Lawrence, Kansas City, Overland Park, Wichita, and Salina. KU has 13 schools and offers more than 360 degree programs of which its programs in special education, city management, speech-language pathology, rural medicine, clinical child psychology, nursing, occupational therapy and social welfare are highly regarded and much sought after.

School Description

The University of Kansas was established in 1854 and has been a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities since 1909. The University embodied the aspirations and determination of the abolitionists who settled on the curve of the Kaw River where it established its first campus.

Today the University of Kansas is a major public research and teaching institution for 28,000 students and 2,600 faculty. Its students are represented by all 50 states of the US, as well as 105 countries. The University’s alumni includes astronauts, artists, authors, business leaders, senators and governors, Pulitzer Prize winners, and a Nobel laureate in addition to thousands of teachers, nurses, physicians, pharmacists, musicians, architects, engineers, and lawyers. Over the years, the University has been associated with many notable achievements, such as, the inventor of basketball founded this sport at KU; Helium was extracted from gas for the first time in a KU lab; the scientist who discovered vitamins A and D was a graduate; and the inventor of the time-release medication capsule taught at the University.

    KU has its own beloved traditions, one of which is popularly known as the ‘waving of the wheat’. Although this is similar to ‘the wave’ you see at sport stadiums, when KU students lift their arms over their heads and slowly wave them back and forth, from a distance this looks like a field of Kansas wheat swaying in a prairie breeze, hence the name.
