University of Edinburgh is the sixth oldest university in the English-speaking world. The university is deeply embedded in the fabric of the city of Edinburgh, with many of the buildings in the historic Old Town belonging to the university. The University of Edinburgh’s academic structure is based on three Colleges: College of Humanities and Social Science; College of Medicine & Veterinary Medicine and College of Science and Engineering; within these colleges there are 20 schools.

School Description

University of Edinburgh – founded in 1583 – is one of Scotland’s ancient universities. Some notable alumni from Edinburgh’s earlier years include: Charles Darwin, naturalist and geologist, whose radical ideas shaped modern thinking about where we come from; Flora Philip, the first female member of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society and one of the first women to graduate from the University in 1893 and Robert Louis Stevenson, Scottish novelist, poet, essayist and travel writer who wrote much the loved classics: Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. To date, 20 Nobel laureates – alumni and academics – are affiliated with Edinburgh University – including Winston Churchill who received a Nobel Prize in Literature.
