School Description

University of Dundee was founded in 1881 by Dr John Boyd Baxter and Miss Mary Ann Baxter. It was then known as University College Dundee. The University was initially founded as an independent academic institution for ‘promoting the education of persons of both sexes and the study of Science, Literature and the Fine Arts’, but it did not have the power to award degrees, hence its students were prepared for the external examinations of the University of London.

In 1897 University College became part of the University of St Andrews and in 1954 it was renamed Queen’s College. At this point it was still an integral part of the University of St Andrews. In 1966, a recommendation was made by the Advisory Committee, to grant a Royal Charter and establish the University of Dundee. The petition was approved and, Queen’s College became the University of Dundee on August 1, 1967. Today the University’s nine schools offers multiple disciplines in ungraduated and postgraduate studies and all of these schools have associated research centres.

            1995-1999, Sarah Hawkins

The best place to be a student. I studied Psychology at Dundee University and I loved every minute of it. Such a fantastic place to be a student. The campus is compact which allows you to make friends quickly. I'm so glad I chose to go to Dundee, if you are considering Dundee University, I guarantee you won't regret it.

          • Testimony
2006-2010, MA in Economics and European Studies with German

Excellent language department and Erasmus experience opportunities. Being a Polish national, having studied in English and attended German classes throughout my 4 years of Uni, I have been thoroughly exposed to multicultural and multilingual environments and it has been a fantastic experience that I have cherished. I had outstanding German teachers who not only taught us a language, but also incorporated cultural classes. We were lucky to have a small class and formed very tight bonds: almost like a family. Dundee University offers an opportunity to go abroad, for either a semester or the whole year, and I took up this challenge. This was probably my second best decision in life (first one being, coming to study in Dundee) :) Year abroad changed my life: improved my language skills, facilitated long-lasting friendship, boosted my confidence and improved job prospects. I will be forever grateful for having met enthusiastic and engaging lecturers who cared about their students. If you do too: Dundee is the place to be!
