School Description

University of Central Oklahoma’s history dates back to 1890, when the Territorial Legislature voted to establish the Territorial Normal School. The school initially operated as a normal school with two years of college work and a complete preparatory school and commenced its first class with a group of 23 students in November 9, 1891. Territorial Normal School became Central State Normal School in 1904.

In December, 1919, a resolution was passed, making Central a four-year teachers’ college conferring bachelor’s degrees and hence renamed the Central State Teachers College and in 1954 the College was granted permission to offer a Master of Teaching degree. Over the next few years the College began to offer a Master of Arts in English and Master of Business Administration degrees as well. On April 13, 1971 the name of the institution was changed to Central State University and once again in May 18, 1990, the name was changed to the University of Central Oklahoma.

Over the years UCO has achieved notable status in many areas: In 2006 it became the first major Oklahoma University to have 100 percent of its energy supplied by wind power as well as an Olympic community partner and Olympic/Paralympic training site. UCO’s head coach of the UCO Wrestling Team, David James, has led the University to 12 national titles and UCO’sCheer and Pom teams have consistently ranked in the top five in the country for Division II since 2012. UCO is also home to the nationally recognized Jazz Studies program and its Jazz Lab has been named multiple times as the best place in the Oklahoma City metro area for live jazz music.

          • Testimony
            1981-1986, Broadcasting, Marketing, Military Science

I had the honor of graduating from Central State (now UCO) and owe almost all of my success to what I learned there in and out of the classroom. I took full advantage (even as commuter in the late 70's) with three years of ROTC and four years with Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE). My time in Student Senate, and other organizations taught me valuable life lessons in leadership, management, and the value of my degree (Broadcasting). I have travelled the world and take UCO with me everywhere I go! Perfect class size, great reputation, world class education, strong alumni, and the best value in the great state of Oklahoma!
