School Description

University of Central Florida was officially incorporated on June 10, 1963 with the vision to educate students for promising space-age careers in engineering, electronics and other technological professions. In 1965 however, when the University’s first president was appointed, the vision was slightly altered as various surveys determined that Central Florida needed business people and teachers in addition to scientists and engineers. Hence it was decided to include liberal arts, education and business studies, in addition to computer and engineering courses.

In February 1966, the University changed its name to Florida Technological University and the University commenced classes on October 7, 1968, offering 55 degree programs within five colleges: Business Administration; Education; Humanities and Social Sciences; Natural Sciences; and Engineering and Technology. The first two of the University’s fourteen regional campuses, Daytona and Cocoa, also opened that year.

In 1978, around the time of the appointment of the university’s second president, Dr. Trevor Colbourn, owing to the diversification of UCF’s academic programs, the school’s name was changed yet again to the University of Central Florida. In 1989, UCF’s academic programs were reorganized to create the College of Arts and Sciences. Today UCF offers 212 degree programs in 12 colleges, and 10 regional campuses. Among UCF’s notable alumni are a Pulitzer Prize winning writer, John C. Bersia; Miss America, Ericka Dunlap; NASA Director, William W. Parsons Jr; and Olympic Gold Medalist (Volleyball), Phil Dalhausser.
