School Description

University College Dublin (UCD) was founded in 1854; its founding rector was John Henry Cardinal Newman. At first it was known as the Catholic University of Ireland, then as the Royal University, and finally as the University College Dublin in 1908, when it became part of the National University of Ireland (NUI). The Institution gained its autonomy from NUI in 1997.

Today, UCD has over 30,000 students, and over 1,400 academic and 1,600 support staff. UCD is number one in Ireland in average research income and at least 9 of its subjects are ranked in the top 100 in the world according to the QS world rankings. Some of the notable alumni of UCD are: actors, Gabriel Byrne and Brendan Gleeson; authors, Maeve Binchy, Roddy Doyle and Flann O’Brien; former Manchester United and Ireland captain Kevin Moran; and the world famous writer, James Joyce.
