School Description

Transylvania University, founded in 1780, is the 16th oldest institution of higher learning in the country. The University started out with a medical school, law school, seminary and a college of arts and sciences. The University is affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the Bachelor of Arts degree.

Today, Transylvania serves nearly 1,100 students, providing them with a rigorous liberal arts education that develops the whole person and provides everything needed to thrive in many careers, not just one. Students broaden their knowledge across disciplines, grow as leaders, partner with the community and hone the critical writing, reasoning and communication skills that employers and grad programs value.

Over the years, Transylvania University has produced several notable alumni, including Henry Clay, famed statesman, who was also a law professor and a member of Transylvania’s Board of Trustees; Stephen F. Austin, founder and hero of Texas; Cassius M. Clay, abolitionist; John C. Breckinridge and Richard M. Johnson, US vice presidents; John Marshall Harlan and Samuel Freeman Miller, Supreme Court justices.
