School Description

San José State University was founded in 1857 as Minns Evening Normal School, making it the oldest public institution of higher education in the western area of the United States. In 1862, the school had its first 54 graduates, all of whom were women. In 1970, Former Student Gaylord Nelson, who went on to become Governor and Senator of Wisconsin, had a leading role in creating the now annual ‘Earth Day’. SJSU is also the only university in North America that has a center devoted to Beethoven Studies. It was founded in 1983, and the center even has skull fragments and a lock of hair belonging to the legendary composer.

San José’s university campus is also home to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library. It was opened in 2003 and is the first library in the United States to be funded and operated both by a city and a university. Other than the university's main campus, SJSU also has a South campus that is home to the university's main athletics fields, and Spartan stadium. The Commercial and Aviation Management is based in the university's Airport campus. In 2007, the university celebrated its 150th anniversary, and it continues to be one of the top 200 universities in the United States, and one of the top 15 schools for postgraduate studies.

            Incredible writing program

I met an outstanding number of authors here and the most amazing part is that so many of my classmates have grown into notable and successful authors. An invaluable educational experience. From the writing workshops, to the visiting authors, to the grammar lessons, to the guest speakers I learned not only how to be a writer but that I could be an author.
