School Description

Louisiana State University was originally established as a Military School in Central Louisiana in 1860. A year later however, the school closed just as the American Civil War began. After the war, the college opened again in 1865. In 1870, the college was renamed Louisiana State University. One of the major events for the University was its merger with Louisiana State University Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1877. With this merger, the university was renamed ‘University to the Louisiana State University and Agricultural & Mechanical College’. It moved to its present location in 1932. For some time the university suffered from low enrollment and budget and hence started restricting the expansion of its facilities.

Over the years however, the University overcame these challenges and by 1936 it established itself as one of the finest universities in South. As of now, the university’s efforts have paid off and 2014-2015 received the largest class of all time. It has also expanded academically, offering over 200 degree programs. Two of the University’s notable alumni who have contributed to America’s early Space Program are: Maxime Faget, NASA engineer and Walter C. Williams, NASA pioneer and founder.
