School Description

Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) can trace its history back to 1963 when the Minister of Education announced the establishment of a series of Regional Technical Colleges (RTCs). The first of these were opened in 1970, but plans for an RTC in Limerick were dropped when in 1994 an independent National Institute for Higher Education was opened in the city. This Institute would come to be known as Limerick Institute of Technology.

In 1999, the Higher Education and Training Awards Council gave LIT the authority to award its own bachelors, masters and doctorates degrees. Today, LIT has five campuses in Munster, Ireland, primarily serving the counties of Limerick, Tipperary and Clare. LIT is home to more than 6,500 students and 500 members of staff.
