School Description

Lawrence Technological University was founded in 1932, by Russell E. Lawrence and his brother, E. George Lawrence (who led Lawrence Tech from 1934 to 1964), amidst the chaos of the Great Depression. The school was originally called Lawrence Institute of Technology; this was changed to Lawrence Technological University in 1989.

Wayne H. Buell, who served as president from 1964 to 1977 and as chair of the board and CEO until 1981, worked to build a firm foundation for the University’s early emergence as a technological leader. Over the years, future presidents of Lawrence Tech also contributed significantly towards the enhancement of the University’s international reputation as a distinguished center of technological education and research.

Lawrence Tech was founded as a college of engineering with only a few hundred students and a handful of faculty. Today it offers more than 100 programs in four colleges, with a total enrollment of approximately 4,500 students, and employs more than 400 full- and part-time faculty. Some of its notable alumni include, Steven A. Ballmer, CEO of Microsoft; John DeLorean, auto innovator and creator of the first muscle car-the GTO; Ronald Knockeart, inventor, laser barcode scanner and keyless door locks on cars and A. Alfred Taubman, pioneer developer of shopping malls among others.
