School Description

Laffayete College was officially established on March 9, 1826, when the governor of Pennsylvania signed the new college’s charter. Classes – in mathematics and the classics – began on May 9, 1832 with 43 students. Mathematics was a priority for the founders, along with English. In fact, Lafayette was the first college in America to establish a Chair for the study of English language and literature. Over the years it added Civil Engineering to it curriculum becoming one of the first colleges in America to do so. As a result the ongoing union of arts, sciences, and engineering remains perhaps the most distinctive feature of the Lafayette curriculum.

Today, Lafayette has about 2,400 students, studying in its 60 buildings across the campus on College Hill and elsewhere. Lafayette’s notable alumni include two Nobel Prize winners: Philip S. Hench, winner of Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1950 and Haldan K. Hartline, winner of Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1967.
