School Description

Kalamazoo College's traces its roots back to a visionary Baptist named Thomas Merrill who arrived in Michigan with a modest budget of $7.00 and a dream to establish a Baptist college in the state. Together with the assistance of Judge Caleb Eldred, their shared ambitions gave birth to the institution's first incarnation in 1833, The Michigan and Huron Institute. It later became what is now known as the Kalamazoo College in 1855 after earning the ability to award degrees.

Today, Kalamazoo College is among the country's 100 oldest colleges and universities. Its 60-acre hilltop campus houses 6 academic buildings, 3 athletic facilities, and 6 residence halls for all its 1,450 students coming from 43 states and 34 countries, 27% of which are students of color. It offers majors, minors, and concentration programs in fine arts, humanities, interdisciplinary studies, language and literature, natural sciences and mathematics, physical education, and social sciences all taught by over 100 full-time faculty members, 92% of which hold a Ph.D or the highest degree in their fields. Kalamazoo College is nationally known for its curriculum called the "K-Plan", a strict liberal arts scholarship and domestic and international experiential education opportunities for undergraduates.

          • Testimony
            1966-1970, B.A. Cum Laude

A great liberal arts school in the finest tradition!

Kalamazoo College formed me in the truest sense. The expanded horizons afforded by K cannot be overstated. Being a part of the K "family" is something I would heartily recommend to anyone seeking an education, and not just a degree.

          • Testimony
            1969-1972, Bachelor's degree

Among the Best of the Liberal Arts Colleges

Size--profs and staff know students; students know each other. International emphasis-study abroad and second language proficiency is normal. Culture-religious heritage and values permeate the place. Great Religion Department.

          • Testimony
            1995-1999, BA

My husband calls K College the Harvard of Michigan

Four of the best years in my life. My study abroad experience was life changing (6 months in Oaxaca, Mexico), as was my 10 week field research internship in Cañas, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. The science program is one of the best. The professors are incredible. The campus is beautiful.
