School Description

Hollins University was established in the year 1842 as Valley Union Seminary after a 6-year long quest by its founder, Charles Lewis Cocke, to provide higher education for women in the South at a time when women's education was considered nothing but a fruitless business. Through the years, it has evolved from a coeducational college to an exclusive college for women under several changes in the institution's name. In 1958, it started offering graduate programs for coed students until finally becoming Hollins University in the year 1998.

Today, Hollins University celebrates its 175th year in providing quality higher education. It campus in Roanoke sits on a 475-acre land that houses not only its educational facilities, but as well as a museum and ten residence halls where it accommodates almost 98% of freshmen students. Hollins University offers 27 undergraduate majors and 8 graduate programs in 12 areas of concentrations of liberal arts for nearly 1,000 students from 40 states and 20 countries.
