Haverford's inner light shines for all those who bother to look. Beyond all the wisdom bestowed upon us by our Quaker elders, humor treated ourselves by the likes of Tom Haverford himself and Dave Barry (WHOM I MET BUT MAY ONLY BE ABLE TO READ THIS PART), I was taught how to teach myself there. Joanie Loves Chachi. We have an Honor Code that fundamentally changes lives. It is truly a peaceful and scenic place. Go visit McGill, Founders, the Duck Pond, the cross country track or Kannerstein '63 Field.

            1964-1968, B.A.

What remains unique and defining about Haverford College for me is the lived commitment in dorms, in classes, in administration and the care-taking of the grounds and every other time and place – a commitment to quietly respecting and listening to the concerns and lives of others, long ago or in fiction or in another dorm, which was also a way of quietly respecting and listening to one’s own heart and mind. Haverford gave me the Meeting space to be quiet and to listen as a model of being fully human and as a model of how to learn from stars or old Greek texts or John Woolman or W.B. Yeats or Edward Hyde’s History of the Rebellion. Haverford was in every way a generosity and a kindness of community and learning. The Honor Code that held each of us responsible to one another for that way of generosity and kindness is the basis of my teaching and learning with students today, and the basis of every relationship that matters to me. In my senior year I took part in an independent study seminar with four other seniors on W.B. Yeats. We stumbled about and blathered as loudly as any Cuchulain or Fionn. In Yeats’ Celtic Twilight I found a description that has continued to matter to me of how Haverford taught me to try to live: We can make our minds so like still water that beings gather about us that they may see, it may be, their own images, and so live for a moment with a clearer, perhaps even with a fiercer life because of our quiet. Haverford made that longing of Yeats real to me in everyday experience, and did so through the insistence on how “WE can make our minds…” Not me alone. Haverford taught me to look to the sense of the meeting, the courtesy of the classroom, to wait to listen and to meet and find myself more fiercely curious and alive with one and another in generous company.
