At one time the FIU campus was considered to be in the middle of nowhere. The modern, newly-constructed buildings seemed to rise out of the swamps of western Dade County. There was no community to speak of surrounding he campus. In other words it was like a vast wasteland with buildings of contemporary design waiting for something to happen. But things were happening. Even though the student population was low, the school was managing to attract an outstanding faculty in many fields, but as was my experience, especially in the School of Hotel And Food Service Management, Many famous and revered faculty members had left other well-known schools to move south to the new school and campus and it didn't take long for the university to gain quite a reputation in many fields of endeavor, and one can only suppose it is still that way today, I know that today in the hotel and food industries, when you say you're a graduate of FIU, people seem impressed.

I transferred to Florida International University (FIU) and the Honors College of FIU from an honors college at another university because I sought to achieve more and attain an even greater well-rounded university education. As an honors student at FIU I was provided the abundance of opportunities that I needed to enrich my university experience. Most noteworthy was the Honors College Study Abroad Program in the Peruvian Amazon, which is part of the unique global perspective component of the FIU curriculum. Alongside the other globally-focused courses that I completed at FIU, the study abroad program allowed me to gain a hands on international perspective that has served me well in my postgraduate pursuits. As FIU further grows and develops, I am certain that it will continue to offer many opportunities to its future students to help them stand out amongst graduates of other universities.
