          • Testimony
            1997-1999, MPA

I will admit that I was a reluctant student at Evergreen - I was a more traditional person back then, less sure of myself and my voice - and I just wanted to rush through undergrad studies and move forward. I did not take full advantage of the unique opportunities an Evergreen education not only provides but encourages - and I regret that now. Evergreen frees the open-minded student to explore different disciplines, encouraging interdisciplinary study, allows self-directed study, loosens the grip and fear of "good" or "bad" grades with narrative, descriptive faculty and self evaluations. Classes and seminars are small, access to world-class faculty is easy and the whole experience is egalitarian and idea-driven in nature. Essentially, real learning and hands-on experience are possible at Evergreen in a way that they are not in most traditional four-year universities. The possibilities are endless if a person has a vision and self-motivation to work in a somewhat unusual academic environment. While I did not embrace the Evergreen ethos during my own time there, the experience has informed the way I have lived my life and launched my professional endeavors - it taught me a kind of fearlessness that brought out the individual in me. I have moved abroad to several countries on my own, started small businesses, taken jobs in a variety of industries. Evergreen reinforced in me the need for constant, lifelong learning, searching and taking on new challenges. Perhaps that is the lasting impression - being a Greener grad actually changes how you approach the world and how you take on new experiences. It is one piece/a launching pad to lifelong education, both formal and experiential.

          • Testimony
            1981-1984, BA

Being a Greener helped me to think and create in a unencumbered fashion, seeing possibilities instead of limitations, while living in an intellectual community that supported the road less traveled. I can never say enough about the value of seminar education. The discourse and research I did in my studies lead me to new knowledge portals, instead of preparing to take tests, (my freshman 1979 State University days). The foundation of investigation and discernment has helped me to this day. Finding solutions leads to identity definition and lifestyle security, the ultimate reward, which I am grateful to share with my family. I work for environmental sustainability, wrote "4015 Days", earned an M.F.T., became an Inland Wetlands Commissioner, and built a home based real estate business. The adventure is just beginning.

          • Testimony
            2002-2004, BA

I attended Evergreen from 2002-2004 and received a BA in Liberal Arts. I studied photography and "minored" in art history while there, and got to create my own curriculum during the summer of 2003, where I got college credit for travelling to Peru and taking photos of my travels and writing about them. At the end, I printed the images in the darkroom by hand, framed them and displayed them in a local coffee shop. Of course, I had to pay for my travel expenses, but nothing can top the ability to get college credit for exploring the world and documenting it!
