School Description

Cork Institute of Technology (CIT), founded in 1973, today has over 12,000 students, out of which its 6,000 full-time students are enrolled in a wide range of courses, at every level including PhD. CIT has four separate campuses in Cork – it’s main campus is located in Bishopstown; the Crawford College of Art and Design is at Sharman Crawford Street; CIT Cork School of Music is in Union Quay; and the National Maritime College of Ireland is in Ringaskiddy, Co. When it comes to its faculty, out of CIT's 1,425 staff members, over 400 are permanent full-time faculty.

CIT operates according to the Qualifications Act (1999) which means that all courses lead to qualification which is fully recognized by the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ). Some of its notable alumni include: Brian Smyth, an Irish figurative painter; Dan Boyle, former Irish senator; Dorothy Cross, one of Ireland's leading international artists; and Máiréad Nesbitt, a notable Irish violinist.
