School Description

College of Mount Saint Vincent is among the five oldest colleges in New York City. The College was founded by the Sisters of Charity of New York who started out founding schools on Mott Street,  establishing the first system of truly free schools in the world. In 1847, the Sisters of Charity founded the Academy of Mount Saint Vincent, offering a liberal education. This was the first institution to offer higher learning for women in New York.  In 1859, the Academy moved to Riverdale, New York. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, the Academy came to be known as one of the finest institutions of higher learning for women in the region. By 1898, the Academy was established as a college for women. In 1911, however the Academy’s charter was changed and the college was renamed the College of Mount Saint Vincent.

Over the years, the College of Mount Saint Vincent has grown tremendously, introducing revised curricula, becoming coeducational, and adding a host of majors, undergraduate and graduate extension programs. Today, the College of Mount Saint Vincent serves 1800 students from 28 states and 9 countries; and is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education.
