School Description

Calvin College was founded in 1876 by the Christian Reformed Church in North America and is named after the 16th-century reformer John Calvin. Calvin College is affiliated with the Christian Reformed Church in North America (CRCNA) and Council of Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU). Calvin started out as a school of ministry training with just seven students. Over the years it expanded from a school that trained pastors to one that taught aspiring teachers as well.

The College expanded considerably in the 1900s broadening its curriculum to include pre-professional courses. By 1906 the literary department was officially established as the John Calvin Junior College, a separate entity from Calvin Seminary but over time the institution transformed into four-year college and renamed Calvin College in 1931. Today Calvin College is home to more than 4000 students.

            Diversity is Key!!

I don't know any other college that embraces diversity and loves culture like Calvin. As an international student, I love it here at Calvin because a lot of people love to know about my culture and tell me they love my accent. Go Knights!!

          • Testimony
            1963-1967, Bachelors Degree

Science training in the context of faith

The culture at Calvin was to provide rigorous education in the context of helping students to understand that everything we did was to glorify God. Professors who were not only committed Christians, but took a personal interest in every student they had. Even though I was a science major, I knew that when I took literature, history, philosophy and art classes, I was often acknowledged by professors by name outside of the Classroom. In my academic medical career, I have often been told by people in graduate and medical schools "We love Calvin students." When I have asked why the answers usually reflect that that a faith based education instills a level of commitment; "Calvin students don't quit." I was a second generation Calvin student. Both of my parents attended Calvin. Two of my children are Calvin grads. My oldest grandson just finished his freshman year at Calvin. God has used Calvin College to enrich each of our lives.

A college combining excellence in academics integrated with faith

At Calvin, I felt like walls broke down in my mind as I realized my faith was integral to every single part of my life. Every time I visit Calvin I am inspired again by the love for God and each other that the faculty, staff and student exhibit. It's a wonderful place to learn and explore, while growing in your faith journey.
