School Description

Founded as Throop University in 1891 in Pasadena, California, and renamed the California Institute of Technology in 1920. Caltech then took the beaver as its mascot—an homage to nature's engineer.

              If you want to get started early learning to be a hard science professor this is the place to go. You should be good at, and really like, STEM subjects. You need to be able to focus and work hard. It's an intense experience and there are lots of interesting people. If you like space stuff, the Jet Propulsion Lab is up the street and takes Techers for summer jobs. From Tech you will learn to read technical literature and apply it to your work.

              I have forgotten most of what I learned at Caltech or it has become obsolete in the 54 years since i graduated. However, the most valuable things I gained from Caltech are the constant demand for critical and analytical thinking that has served me all my life (which is priceless!), and the opportunity to mix with incredible faculty, including many Nobel Prize winners (also priceless!).
