School Description

The British & Irish Modern Music Institute (BIMM) is home to over 750 international students from 60 countries. Students at BIMM can choose from a wide range of bachelor’s degree programs including Professional Musicianship, Commercial Modern Music, Event Management, Music Journalism, and Music Business. With a wide range of modern, state-of-the-art facilities available at BIMM, there are endless opportunities. Students have access to Mac songwriting suites, award-winning music studios, performance rooms, and post-production suites, among many other facilities. Moreover, students are supported by various enrichment opportunities, including weekly masterclasses from industry giants, the chance to organize their own gigs, networking opportunities, and the chance to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities. BIMM’s Careers Hub provides guidance to students for their initial steps into the music industry, along with helping find work-placement opportunities. Although BIMM does not provide its own on-campus accommodation, guides are available to help students find a suitable place to live.

    This program is designed to equip students with the theoretical and practical knowledge of topics related to business; management; finance; economics; marketing; customers operations; communication; information technology; business policy; and strategy.

    This program is designed to equip students with the theoretical and practical knowledge of Business principles and techniques. The program offers courses that focus on the study of the fundamentals of business, like buying, selling and producing products; business organization; and accounting.

    Music Journalism

    This program is designed to equip students with the concepts and practical application of the fundamentals of Journalism. The program offers courses that focus on news writing and editing; reporting; photojournalism; layout and graphic design; journalism law and policy; professional standards and ethics; research methods; and journalism history and criticism.

    Music Performance (Guitar, Bass, Drums & Vocals)

    BMus (Hons) Popular Music Performance (BIMM London only)

    This course is for musicians who wish to gain ‘session musician skills’. These include a high level of music (sight) reading, listening skills and music theory as well as technique. This is the harder course to access as it requires the applicant to have a solid knowledge of all the above skills*. This course follows stricter performance skills and also teaches music technology.

    *If a student wishing to attend this course does not have the required skills, they can access the BMus Foundation Course – this makes it a 4-year course – the Foundation year is also approved for a student loan.


    BA (Hons) The professional Musicianship

    As well as teaching a high level of technique, this course also covers a wider range of modules including Applied Music Business, Artist Development and Entrepreneurship, Music Publishing, Studio Musicianship and Studio Recording.

    It is for students who want to develop their own performance style and gain a wider knowledge of the music industry to enable them to shape their individual career goals.

    Music Production

    The BA (Hons) Music Production degree at BIMM London is a specialist programme designed for those wishing to pursue a career in a range of music industry roles, such as producer, sound engineer or creative artist.

    The aim of the course is to nurture your creative flair while you develop your skills as a music producer across a wide range of contexts, including traditional studio and live recording, songwriting, live sound and music for moving image. You’ll study the context of contemporary music and the industry that supports it, as well as learning personal, project management and business skills.

    At BIMM London, we have a strong focus on writing technique, analysis and personal stylistic development, and you’ll be encouraged from day one to explore your creativity as an artist in a range of disciplines, from solo and group performance to commercial songwriting and music production for film, television and online channels.

    The degree is both academically and musically challenging, providing the perfect balance between practical and technical skills, and theory and analysis.

    To succeed as a great songwriter, a detailed understanding of the music business is essential. We’ll share our knowledge of music publishing, contracts and recording technology, and will deliver our teaching in line with the latest trends and directions in the evolving music industry.

            As a student who is just about to Finish his first year doing BAHons Professional Musicianship - Guitar, I have REALLY enjoyed my time at BIMM as a whole so far. The lecturers are great at what they teach, and you can have a laugh while learning so much at the same time, and they make it really engaging and enjoyable. The end result will DEFINATELY be, the more work you put into this, you WILL be noticed. Just make sure you give it your all :)
