School Description

In 1849, a Princeton-educated Presbyterian missionary named Dr. Daniel Baker founded Austin College, making it Texas' oldest higher education institution that continues to operate under its original name. Originally located in Huntsville, the college later moved to north Texas after the outbreak of yellow fever, the Civil War, and economic challenges. In 1930, it merged with an institution exclusively for women called the Texas Presbyterian College.

Today, Austin College's Sherman campus sits on an 85-acre land that houses 50 modern buildings and facilities for learning, living, fitness and recreation. It currently offers over 50 undergraduate majors and minors and majors across 18 academic departments. It also awards a master's degree and teaching certification throough its Austin Teacher Program (ATP), a five-year MAT programs. 80% of Austin College students are accommodated in its 5 residence halls, including freshmen who are required to live on-campus six 14-week semesters or three academic years.

            Austin College changes lives

Austin College alumni have a bond that's hard to explain and different than other colleges. A small knit community of students and professors that get to know each other on a personal basis. A college that challenges you and will have a long lasting positive affect on your life. I would go back today! A very special place!

          • 1969-1974, BA/MA

Austin College - opportunity for personal relationship with professors

I enjoyed the smaller student body and the opportunity to create real relationships with your professors. You were always more than an assigned seat number or 179 on alphabetical class role. If you needed help it was always available. Great place to get a solid education and be a part of a diverse campus environment.
