Amherst College, one of the premier liberal arts college is located in Amherst, Massachusetts. Amherst offers 38 majors in the arts, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. Amherst’s open curriculum allows each student — with the help of faculty advisers — to chart an individual course through the more than 800 courses offered at the college.

School Description

Amherst College, founded in 1821, is named after the town, which in turn was named after Jeffery, Lord Amherst, a veteran from the Seven Year’s War. The Massachusetts Legislature granted Amherst College its charter in 1825, the same year that the college awarded degrees to its first class.

Amherst is a member of the Five Colleges, a consortium with Smith, Mount Holyoke and Hampshire Colleges and the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Students are allowed take courses at any of the colleges. Amherst’s notable alumni include, four Nobel laureates, numerous Pulitzer Prize winners, the president of the National Urban League, a chief justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, several National Book Award winners, a US president [Calvin Coolidge], and countless others who have contributed to society in important but less public ways.

    Amherst College works closely with the Book and Plow Farm – which is a diversified vegetable & livestock farm close to downtown Amherst – to provide vegetables for the dining hall and educational programming for the students. During the Spring and Fall semester students can also apply to work on the farm though work study.
