Program Description

Students generally earn a Bachelor of Arts in Justice and Law from American University in four years. Of a total 120 credit hours needed to complete the degree, 36 credit hours must be chosen from the major area of study. Five courses, for 15 credit hours, are required. These courses can focus on criminology, public policy, justice systems, law research, and justice issues such as political, legal, economic and social problems.

Students must also complete another 21 credit hours of concentrated courses, 15 of which can be selected at the 300 level or higher. Upper division courses are divided into three categories, which are criminal justice, criminology and terrorism and security studies. The criminal justice concentration offers courses in law enforcement, corrections, juvenile delinquency, prison communities and more, while criminology offers courses in organized crime, criminal behavior, victimology and domestic violence. The concentration of terrorism and security studies features courses such as domestic terrorism, the evolution of global jihad and investigating and prosecuting terrorism.
