Students who have completed American University’s core curriculum requirements may enter the Computational Science (BS) program. This specialized four-year degree is administered by the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Students are required to take 50 credit hours of courses that focus on mathematics and computational techniques and how they can be used to solve problems in other fields.
Many of the required classes revolve around calculus, computer science, algebra and statistics. Students must also choose an application area to pursue, such as biology, economics, mathematics or psychology. Some choose to double-major in their chosen field. The goal is to use computational simulation and modeling of systems to help make advances and solve problems in engineering as well as natural and social sciences. The semester-long design project that the students must complete helps prepare them for the professional world. They practice technical writing, speaking and ethics in addition to mathematics and computer science.Apply Now
