Averett University was founded in 1859 as a Baptist women's college named Union Female College. In 1924, a separate science department was added, as well as a full time library. This came as the result of President Craft being concerned with the students' lack of scientific knowledge after one student referred to an oyster as "a fish built like a nut." The period of 1967 to 1980, saw the college transition into a four-year co-educational college offering bachelor's degrees. Averett College officially became Averett University in July of 2001. Averett began offering classes in Autism Spectrum disorders in the fall of 2008.
Averett University has almost 1900 students, representing 23 states and 14 countries. The University holds an annual Arts@Averett Series, where students can participate in the many events that are a part of that series, which includes Averett Theatre Players, Averett Singers, and Averett Gospel Choir. Averett also has many student clubs and events that include ski trips, movie nights on the lawn, and Comedian and Leadership Conferences.
