Statistics (American University)
Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Statistics typically take four years to complete an undergraduate degree at American University. Of the 120 credit hours needed to graduate, scholars must take 53 credit hours of statistics coursework, with 22 of those hours in 300-level or above courses. Required courses include three levels of calculus, plus linear algebra, probability and regression. In addition, students must complete either basic statistics or basic statistics with calculus, as well as either intermediate statistics or biostatistics courses.
Students must also complete 21 credit hours from one of three tracks, applied statistics, data science or mathematical statistics. For those who choose applied statistics, coursework will include statistical sampling, theory and probabilities, as well as learning how to design and analyze experiments. The data science track includes data and computer science, statistical programming and database courses. The mathematical statistics track includes design and analysis of experiments, as well as additional statistics and mathematics coursework.
