Spanish/Latin America: Language and Area (American University)
The four-year BA major for Spanish/Latin America: Language and Area offered through the College of Arts and Sciences at American University is designed for students who wish to learn in-depth about Latin America and become proficient in that region’s language. The program requires 120 credit hours to graduate, 54 of which are spent specifically on the major. It is also offered as a minor for undergraduate students, requiring 24 credit hours, or about one year, to complete.
The course of study attempts to examine Latin America from the perspectives of both the social sciences and the humanities. Students may build intercultural communication skills specific to the region, in addition to the language itself. Classes offered may focus on politics, culture, literature, art, activism and the economy of the area.
The program seeks to ensure that participants emerge with the skills and expertise necessary to understand Latin America in specific contexts and navigate the region as a global citizen.
