Sociology (American University)
The BA program in Sociology at American University looks at society from every angle and asks students to consider why we do the things we do. The curriculum includes both global and national perspectives and puts our society in the context of the world at large.
Students choose from five emphases within the program to focus their studies, including global medicine, immigration, international politics, social justice, or environmental issues. The program culminates in a capstone project that includes an appropriate internship based on the student’s intended career path, and a workshop seminar in which students can discuss ideas with one another and ultimately produce a thesis paper for use in graduate applications or potential journal publication. The program takes approximately four years to complete and includes a total of 120 credits required for graduation.
Students who also wish to complete an MA in Sociology may apply for a combined program to complete their bachelor’s and master’s at the same time. Admission to the combined program requires a 3.00 GPA and approval of the student’s advisor in addition to the regular university requirements.
