Secondary Education (American University)
For students who want to obtain teaching credentials in secondary education, a BA in secondary education provides a route to certification while completing majors in social sciences and humanities. The secondary education program at American University takes approximately four years, or 120 credit hours, to complete. For the major, it takes over a year at 40 credit hours to finish the remaining requirements.
The program’s course curriculum includes field experience courses, the psychology of education, effective instruction methods, seminars and service learning in the classroom. Participants in the program have the opportunity to work inside of small classes that emphasize experiential learning. The program also offers internship opportunities and access to student-teaching positions.
The curriculum prepares students to enter a vibrant and passionate community of teachers. Many of the courses in the secondary education program overlap with other majors. It’s required that students complete the major curriculum for the field of their choice.
