Religious Studies (American University)
The four-year BA in Religious Studies offered through the College of Arts and Sciences at American University gives students the opportunity to explore and understand the world’s major religions, as well as the philosophies that surround them. The major requires 120 credit hours to graduate, 39 of which are focused specifically on the religious studies program. Students may also participate in an internship, to be decided with advisement.
Throughout the course of study, participants will look closely at Western religions, Asian religions, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism and Judaism- including the stories and art found within them. Classes in ethics and human rights may provide context and critical insight into these beliefs. Students may also take philosophy classes in both ancient and modern thought. Electives are available, allowing students to investigate particular areas of interest further.
This program aims to ensure a thorough understanding of world religions and religious thought, fostering an important comparative framework in students.
