Public Relations & Strategic Communication (American University)
A BA in public relations & strategic communication is a four-year program at American University. After entry into the major, students must complete about 45 credit hours, or a year and a half, of coursework that coincides with the public relations program. Coursework includes classes in media, communication, public relations, public speaking and more. Students may also use electives to build a foundation in a particular interest, such as photography, advertising or politics.
This program provides students with a background in persuasion and strategy when it comes to public relations. The curriculum highlights how society, the economy and politics involve public relations. Students learn how to communicate strategically and how to use smart messages to target an audience. The program includes an education in recent trends and strategic tools. The curriculum consists of courses, hands-on classes and internships.
Public relations students have the opportunity to speak with influencers and to expand their knowledge in real life situations.
