Public Health (American University)
The four-year BA public health program provides students with the means to tackle the maintenance and improvement of health for entire populations. American University requires a 120-hour course load for graduation. The public health major requires at least 52 credit hours, which is about two years’ worth of courses.
Students gain the skills and knowledge necessary to address emerging public health issues. The goal is to introduce students to the challenges of public health care, including childhood obesity, aging populations, environmental degradation, global pandemics and mental health concerns.
Throughout the program, students will develop skills to pursue a career in social and community health. The program combines introductions to health and disease with policy planning, health promotion, bioethics and global health topics. Coursework begins with introductory classes and provides students with a route to dig deeper into a variety of core areas regarding public health. Knowledge of natural and social sciences, socioeconomic differences, new technologies and disease prevention are among the most important.
