Political Science (American University)
The 33-credit hour Master of Arts program in political science at American University prepares students for a career in think tanks, consulting firms, non-profits or political campaign organizations. It focuses on developing critical thinking, leadership, collaboration, presentation and writing skills necessary to succeed. Participants can choose one of three concentrations and tailor the program to their unique goals.
The American Politics track emphasizes the core branches of the government to educate participants about the presidency, executive branch, legislative process and political theory. Comparative politics is about the history of democratization, social and political movements, ethnicity, nationalism and political violence. Finally, Applied Politics focuses on the application of theory into the realms of public policy, advocacy and public affairs.
The one- year program culminates in a three-hour examination in the student's chosen concentration. The rigorous coursework, as well as guidance from best-in-class faculty, enables students to become competitive and productive members of any organization they choose to work with after graduation.
