Philosophy (American University)
Individuals interested in developing their writing, speaking and critical thinking skills can obtain a philosophy degree from American University. They can enroll in a Master of Arts program of 33 credit hours and spend approximately one year studying philosophical thinkers and movements. The program offers two track options: Philosophy and Social Policy or History of Philosophy.
The Philosophy and Social Policy track applies ethics and moral reasoning to a wide range of contemporary issues. It draws from social policy to give students a framework to evaluate biomedicine, human rights, media, business, race relations and the environment with the goal of equipping students with the tools to design and intelligently evaluate policies.
The History of Philosophy track informs students about the discipline’s rich tradition. It provides a thorough overview of analytic and continental philosophy, critical race theory, feminism, Asian and Latin American philosophy and the Western Canon. Both tracks give students the opportunity to hone research skills by writing two publishable papers.
