Program Description
To enter American University's mathematics program, a GPA of 2.0 and departmental approval are needed. The BS in Mathematics requires 120 credit hours to graduate and is a four-year degree. There is an option for students who wish to obtain their grades 7-12 teaching credentials as well. With permission, they can add a second major in secondary education. The additional 36 credit hours for this option would require approximately another year of school. Freshmen and sophomores can expect to take classes in calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. Intro-level science courses are required also, such as chemistry, biology, and physics.
Students will study more advanced math during their junior and senior years. Topics may include the history of mathematics, the foundations of mathematics, probability, and mathematical statistics.
