Jewish Studies (American University)
The Bachelor of Arts in Jewish Studies at American University is a program for students interested in Jewish history and civilization. Graduates of this program can go on to careers in historical preservation and research, education, or media consultation. Others may choose to use this program as a precursor for entering Jewish religious careers.
The coursework required by this program includes 120 credit hours taken over the course of four years, including 39 hours of degree-specific requirements. Students must have foundational language proficiency in Hebrew that does not count toward the major, as well as a 2.0 GPA or better and director approval for formal admission into the program.
Some classes may include advanced Hebrew language studies; Jewish civilization, both ancient and modern; Jewish literature; Jewish philosophy; and Jewish sociological topics. The program culminates in a senior thesis project appropriate for potential publication or graduate program admission. This program is also available as a minor for those who wish to add the curriculum to another major program.
