International Studies (American University)
The goal of the four-year BA in International Studies offered through the School of International Service at American University is to prepare students for a wide variety of international careers in the government, nonprofit sector and private segment. The major requires 120 credit hours to graduate, 57 of which are specifically focused on the International Studies program. It is also available as an undergraduate minor, which requires 21 credit hours, and an undergraduate certificate, which requires 24 credit hours – both of which take about a year to complete.
This interdisciplinary program encourages students to think critically and independently in order to effectively face challenges as an engaged global citizen. Students may choose a regional focus, including their choice of foreign language study. Courses may delve into political theory, economics, history and multicultural perspectives, as well as the tools to interpret such theories. Student success is supported through a mentorship program, as they are expected to carry out their own research.
