History (American University)
The four-year BA in history through the College of Arts and Sciences at American University is designed to provide students with a broad knowledge of major historical periods and regions. The major requires 120 credit hours to graduate, 39 of which are specifically focused on the history program. It is also offered as an undergraduate minor, which requires 21 credit hours or about one year to complete. The BA can be combined with an MA in History, and either 9 or 12 credits from undergraduate work can be applied to the 30 or 36 credit hours required to graduate with the MA, depending on whether the student chooses general history or public history.
Courses offered may examine medieval history, ancient studies, European history and the past of the United States. Students can also learn about Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin American or African history. A regional focus can be chosen, as students are expected to conduct their own research and write a capstone thesis.
