Health Promotion (American University)
The health promotion program at American University is a BS that requires 120 hours of completion as a four-year degree. The major requirements are 58 credit hours, or about two years of study. The program offers a foundation for students to learn to establish and manage wellness programs, to develop media campaigns for health issues, among many other health promotion skills. The course load provides students with knowledge in an emerging discipline that addresses health concerns.
The curriculum includes general biology, human anatomy, basic nutrition, health promotion, multicultural health and health psychology, among other courses. To prepare students for careers in the government, corporations and hospitals, the curriculum includes seminars and health studies internships.
The program offers coursework from the biology and psychology departments, along with opportunities in federal government agencies and nonprofit organizations. Students learn clinical and scientific knowledge of human anatomy, alongside physiology and nutrition. In addition to scientific and health knowledge, they receive training in communication and health promotion programming.
