German Studies (American University)
Students possessing a strong interest in Germany’s culture and language may wish to pursue a degree in German Studies at American University. This program, offered by the Department of World Languages and Cultures in the College of Arts and Sciences, enables candidates to develop extensive knowledge of this historical region of the world.
Successful candidates must complete 51 subject-specific credit hours, including 18 in pursuit of German language proficiency. Bachelor’s degree requirements stipulate completion of 120 credit hours. Most candidates complete the program in four years.
This engaging major allows students to garner a comprehensive understanding of German history, culture and contemporary affairs. In addition to an emphasis on language acquisition, the program features core courses in world governments, comparative politics and intercultural communication. Additional coursework focuses on the humanities and social sciences. Specific classes may include German civilization, culture and Ideology in Europe, modern European movements, Nazi Germany, economic development and European foreign and security policy.
