French Studies (American University)
American University’s BA in French Studies is a four-year program designed to prepare students for future careers in foreign language instruction, translation, history, sociology, or politics. The curriculum includes proficiency in the French language, as well as studies in the culture and history of France and its surrounding region.
Students in this program also declare a minor in a related, career-focused area of study, such as political science, business administration, sociology, or communications. Students may also pursue teacher licensure or proficiency in a second foreign language as part of their degree requirements. The 120 credit hours required for graduation include 39 hours of core studies in the major, as well as general education requirements, courses within the chosen minor, and 21 credit hours of electives within French Studies.
The culmination of the program is a capstone project completed over the course of the final semester, wherein students can demonstrate their proficiency in the French language, linguistics, and French cultural studies. The capstone may be used to create thesis work appropriate for potential publication in scholarly journals within the field.
